Unhappy At Work? Ask Yourself These Questions

You always have the answer, but you might not have the right question. If you’re currently unhappy in your current job or career path, asking some of these questions can help you gain clarity around the root cause of your dissatisfaction.

Q: Is there a single person, problem, or another variable that’s causing 80% of your dissatisfaction?

Follow up questions for a “Yes” answer:

If so, is it possible to change this?
Is this a temporary issue?
How urgent is your desire for change?

Many times, it’s not our job as a whole that’s causing all the angst – it’s a particular part of it. Zoning in on what’s causing the dissatisfaction can help widen your perspective

On the other hand, if it’s a host of things causing your dissatisfaction, digger deeper into ALL the reasons might be your motivation to make a change.

Q: What are your strengths and how are they being utilized in your current role?

Follow up question:

Can you add or remove work that does or does not match your strengths?

If this job paid you enough to live the lifestyle you want, would you stay? Why or why not?

If pay is the ONLY thing making you want to leave your job, you’re lucky to be doing something you love! However, this question usually leads us to realize that money is not really the issue here. It can also help you clarify why you’d leave even if you had all the dollars.

What is your higher purpose RIGHT NOW?

This one is helpful if you’re thinking that your job doesn’t align with your purpose. It’s easy to get lost in the future when thinking about our purpose. However, all you have is THIS moment. What are you doing with it? There’s a whole lot of questions around this one.

Could you feel good about where you’re at if nothing changed?

It’s not actually your job that’s causing any unhappiness – it’s your thoughts about the job. This is always the case, but that said, you may still want to quit your job! Understanding how your thoughts are affecting your happiness will help you make the best decision in how to move forward.
